Change My Heart
“Teach me, LORD, the meaning of your statutes, and I will always keep them. Help me understand your instruction, and I will obey it and follow it with all my heart… Turn my heart to your decrees… Turn my eyes from looking at what is worthless; give me life in your ways.”
— Psalm 119:33–37 (CSB)
There’s a difference between knowing what God says and actually wanting what God wants.
That’s what struck me about this passage.
The psalmist doesn’t simply pray, “Lord, tell me what to do.” He prays:
Teach me.
Help me understand.
Help me stay on Your path.
Turn my heart.
Turn my eyes.
Give me life.
In other words, “God, don’t just change my behavior. Change me.”
Because sometimes we already know what Scripture says. The problem isn’t a lack of information. The struggle is that our heart still wants something else.
Our eyes wander toward things that are worthless.
Our hearts chase things that will never satisfy us.
Our flesh pulls us away from the very commands we know are good.
And maybe that’s when our prayer needs to change.
Instead of only praying, “God, fix my circumstances,” maybe we need to start praying, “God, fix what’s happening inside of me.”
Turn my heart toward You.
Turn my eyes away from what has no eternal value.
Teach me to love what You love.
Help me obey You not because I have to, but because I genuinely take pleasure in Your ways.
That kind of transformation doesn’t happen by simply trying harder. It happens when we surrender more of ourselves to God and allow His Word and His Spirit to reshape our desires.
Today, maybe our prayer can simply be:
Lord, teach me Your ways.
Change what I desire.
Turn my eyes from what is worthless.
Turn my heart toward You.
And give me life through Your righteousness.
Because following Jesus isn’t just about knowing the right path.
It’s about asking Him to give us a heart that wants to walk it.
