Don’t Let the Tool Become the Truth

July 4, 2025, 7:00 AM

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on something unusual—how we use tools in our walk with God. I know this may sound strange but today I want to talk about using ChatGPT.

God has given us many tools in life. Hammers build homes. Fire gives warmth. Technology connects us. Even ChatGPT can be used to share scripture, refine sermons, or support a message. But here’s the danger—when we start turning to the tool for what we should be turning to God for.

I have know of at least two friends recently that were struggling, and instead of going to the Lord in prayer or opening the Word, they turned to AI and asked it to give them “words of encouragement.” Now I get it—when you’re down, you want something quick, something that feels like it’ll lift you up. But the truth is, no tool can fill the void that only God was meant to fill.

The Word says:

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

—Psalm 121:1–2

There is no substitute for the presence of God. Not a pastor. Not a friend. Not even a digital assistant. Those things can point you in the right direction, but they can’t be your source of peace, strength, or identity. That comes from God alone.

So if you’re having a rough day, don’t start by asking a machine for comfort—start by asking the Maker. Get in His Word. Spend time in prayer. Turn your worry into worship.

Let’s use the tools God gives us wisely—but always remember that the Tool is not the Truth. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6), and He is the one who restores our soul.
