Just Because You Can, Doesn’t Mean You Should

Scripture (CJB):

“Which of you by worrying can add an hour to his life?”

—Matthew 6:27 (CJB)

Reflection:

One of the harder lessons to learn is this: just because we technically have the time doesn’t mean we truly have the time. A gap on the calendar doesn’t automatically mean it’s available.

When we say yes too quickly—because we can squeeze it in—we often don’t realize what we’re actually saying no to: time with family, time alone with God, rest, or obedience to what He already placed in front of us. Over time, we pour ourselves out so much that we end up empty, running on fumes, and wondering why we feel disconnected or exhausted.

Jesus understood the value of time deeply. That’s why He warned us about worry—it steals time without giving anything back. Anxiety produces nothing but drains everything. God never calls us to be busy at the expense of being faithful.

Stewardship isn’t just about money—it’s about time, energy, and attention. And wisdom knows when availability becomes misalignment.

Encouragement:

Before saying yes today, pause and pray. Ask not just can I do this? but should I? Does it honor God? Does it protect what He has entrusted to you? Does it align with His priorities for your life right now?

Remember: even Jesus stepped away to rest and pray. If the Son of God guarded His time with the Father, we should too.

So today, ask yourself honestly:

“I know I can… but can I really?”
