More Than Water
“We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” — Romans 6:4 (NIV)
Today was a day I’ll never forget.
Last year, I had the incredible privilege of baptizing my son. Today, I had the honor of baptizing my son’s mother-in-law. Two different people. Two different journeys. One Savior.
Moments like these remind me that baptism is so much more than a ceremony.
The water doesn’t save us—Jesus does.
Baptism is a public declaration that our old life has been buried with Christ and that we have been raised to walk in the new life only He can give. It is an outward expression of an inward transformation.
In Romans 6, Paul explains that baptism symbolizes our union with Jesus in His death, burial, and resurrection. Just as Christ conquered the grave, we are called to leave our old way of living behind and rise with a new purpose, a new identity, and a new hope.
Our world celebrates promotions, graduations, championships, and milestones—and those are wonderful moments. But there are few moments more beautiful than watching someone publicly declare, “I belong to Jesus.” Heaven rejoices over every life surrendered to Christ, and that decision has eternal significance.
What made today especially meaningful was seeing how God continues to work across generations. Last year, it was my son. Today, it was his mother-in-law. It reminded me that God’s grace doesn’t stop with one person. It spreads through families, friendships, and generations as lives are transformed by the gospel.
If you’ve been baptized, remember what it represents. Don’t just remember the day—live the life. Walk each day in the new identity Christ has given you.
And if you haven’t taken that step yet, ask yourself this simple question:
What’s holding you back from publicly identifying with the One who gave everything for you?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the new life that is found only in Jesus Christ. Thank You that through His death and resurrection, our sins are forgiven and we are made new. Help us to live each day in a way that reflects the transformation You have done in our hearts. Give those who have not yet been baptized the courage to publicly declare their faith in You. May our lives continually point others to the hope, grace, and salvation found in Christ alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
