Not Every Good Opportunity Is God’s Assignment

Scripture:

“But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”

— James 3:17 (CJB)

Reflection:

Sometimes things that look good are not actually good for us.

Opportunities come our way all the time—new responsibilities, new commitments, new ideas, new doors that seem exciting and meaningful. But if we accept everything simply because it looks good, sounds good, or feels important, we can slowly drift away from where God truly wants us.

This is why we pray for discernment, wisdom, knowledge, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Before stepping into something new, we should pause and ask:

Lord, is this where You want me?

Is this what You have for me in this season?

When we fail to ask, we often end up overloaded, stressed, and distracted. We become so busy fulfilling commitments we made on our own that we no longer have the time, focus, or spiritual clarity to pour into the people God actually called us to serve.

Not everything that comes your way is from God.

Sometimes it’s simply our own decisions.

Sometimes it’s the enemy dressing distractions in a beautiful package.

But not every distraction is evil—sometimes it’s simply too much.

When we spread ourselves too thin, the ones who truly need us receive the least of us.

Discernment helps us recognize where God is leading—and just as importantly, where He is not.

And when something isn’t meant for us, that doesn’t mean it should be abandoned. Sometimes God simply intends for someone else to carry that assignment—someone with the time, gifting, and calling to do it well.

If we’re constantly chasing what looks right in front of us, we might miss what God is doing just beside us.

Encouragement:

Before saying yes to the next opportunity, take a step back.

Pray.

Seek the Lord.

Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance.

Stay sharp. Stay in the Word. Stay focused.

Don’t rush ahead trying to lead your own path.

Be still enough to be led.
