One Box at a Time
As my wife and I continue unpacking and putting things away in our new house, I’ve noticed something.
It starts fast. The big things get unpacked, furniture finds its place, and the main items all seem to find a home. But then you get down to those last few boxes—the odds and ends, the garage, the shed—and suddenly everything seems to come to a screeching halt.
You look around and think, Where do we even start?
So I finally said, “Let’s just take one box at a time.”
And something happened. The pace started picking back up. Things started getting finished. Instead of being overwhelmed by everything that was left, we simply focused on what was right in front of us.
I think our walk with God can be the same way.
Sometimes we know there is so much we need to give to God—our worries, our anger, our past, our relationships, our finances, our plans, our fears, our habits, and ultimately our entire life.
We look at the whole pile and become overwhelmed because we don’t know how to surrender all of it.
So start with one box.
Give Him one worry today.
Give Him one fear.
Give Him one relationship.
Give Him one part of your past that you’ve been holding onto.
Then tomorrow, give Him another.
“Casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.” — 1 Peter 5:7 CSB
You don’t have to clean out the entire “garage” of your life in one day. Just keep opening the boxes and handing them to God.
One task. One burden. One surrender at a time.
Before you know it, you’ll look around and realize how much lighter you are—not because your life suddenly became perfect, but because you finally stopped carrying what you were meant to give to Him.
And eventually, the last thing you surrender is the biggest thing of all:
Your whole life.
