Sometimes Helping Means Doing, Sometimes It Means Giving Space
There are times when we see someone struggling and we genuinely want to help. So we ask:
“What do you need?”
“What can I do?”
“How can I help?”
Those questions come from a good place. But sometimes we can ask them so much that our desire to help actually becomes another burden the person has to carry.
Sometimes they don’t know what they need.
They are overwhelmed. They are stressed. They are trying to process everything happening around them, and now they also feel like they have to figure out what to tell us to do.
Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is simply give them some space.
But there is another side to this.
When my father passed away, I knew I needed help. But I didn’t want to ask for it. Honestly, I didn’t have the energy to ask. There are moments in life when someone is so deep in grief, stress, pain, or circumstances that asking for help becomes another task they simply don’t have the strength to handle.
Sometimes they don’t need someone asking, “What can I do?”
Sometimes they need someone who sees the need and simply does it.
Bring the meal.
Mow the yard.
Take care of something that obviously needs to be handled.
Sit beside them.
Pray for them.
Handle something small so they have one less thing to think about.
But here’s where we have to be careful: good intentions don’t always mean we’re doing the right thing.
That’s why we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
— Galatians 5:25 NKJV
Before jumping in, pray.
“Holy Spirit, guide me. Give me wisdom and discernment. Show me whether I need to step in or step back.”
There will be times when the Holy Spirit puts something strongly on your heart. You see a need. You know you can meet that need. Don’t always wait for someone to ask.
Just serve.
Then there will be other times when everything inside you wants to fix the situation, but what that person really needs is room to process, pray, grieve, or simply breathe.
In those moments, love may mean giving them space while making sure they know you’re still there.
Jesus didn’t call us merely to have good intentions. He called us to love and serve one another.
And serving someone well means recognizing that sometimes love steps in, and sometimes love steps back.
The wisdom to know the difference comes from God.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, today we invite You into our lives. Give us wisdom, discernment, and understanding. When You place someone in front of us who needs help, show us how to serve them well. Give us the courage to step in when You are calling us to act, and the wisdom to step back when someone needs space. Help us not to serve according to our own understanding, but according to Your guidance. Make us attentive to the needs of those around us and willing to be Your hands and feet when You call.
We pray this in the holy and mighty name of Jesus.
Amen.
