Sometimes Less Is More
Scripture:
“Don’t keep hoarding for yourselves earthly treasures that can be eaten by moths or have rust get into them and where thieves break in and steal. Instead, hoard treasures for yourselves in heaven…” — Matthew 6:19-20 (CJB)
Reflection:
This past week, I spent several days living out of my RV. Life didn’t stop. I still worked every day, showered, handled responsibilities, and dealt with the normal challenges of life. Yet something was different. There was less stress.
The RV wasn’t luxurious. It wasn’t large. There wasn’t room for a lot of extra stuff. What I noticed was that with fewer things to manage, there were fewer things demanding my attention. It was easier to clean up, easier to stay organized, and easier to focus on what mattered.
Then I returned home to a large house filled with projects, maintenance, possessions, and responsibilities. There’s nothing wrong with having a nice home. In fact, our house served our family well for many years as we raised our children. But it reminded me of something important: more possessions often mean more things competing for our time, energy, and peace.
Many of us spend years striving for bigger homes, nicer vehicles, and more stuff, believing those things will bring fulfillment. Yet the moments that truly fill our hearts rarely come from possessions. They come from time with family, meaningful relationships, serving others, and walking closely with God.
I’ve also noticed that when families live farther apart under the same roof, they often become farther apart relationally. Everyone retreats to their own corner, their own room, their own world. While personal space is healthy, God never designed us for isolation. We were created for relationship and community.
This isn’t a call for everyone to sell everything and move into an RV. It’s simply a reminder to evaluate what is adding value to your life and what is merely adding clutter. Sometimes the greatest blessing isn’t gaining more—it’s needing less.
When God is at the center, peace isn’t found in square footage, storage space, or possessions. Peace is found in Him.
Encouragement:
Take a moment today to examine what may be cluttering your life—not just physically, but mentally and spiritually. Ask yourself: “Is this helping me focus on what matters most, or is it distracting me from it?” Sometimes God creates room for greater joy by helping us let go of what we don’t need. Less clutter often creates more space for peace, gratitude, relationships, and God’s presence.
