Stop Adjusting and Listen

Scripture:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”
— Psalm 46:10 (NKJV)

Reflection:

I was talking with a brother this morning, and we started reminiscing about the old stereo equalizers.

Remember those?

You could adjust the bass, mids, and treble until every song sounded exactly the way you wanted. But some people would spend so much time adjusting the equalizer for every song that they practically missed the song itself.

And I thought, that’s exactly what we sometimes do with life—and with our faith.

Something changes, and immediately we reach for the controls.

A relationship feels different—we adjust.
Money gets tight—we adjust.
Plans fall apart—we adjust.
A prayer isn’t answered the way we expected—we adjust again.

We analyze. We fix. We plan. We worry. We rearrange. We keep moving the sliders, trying to make everything sound “right.”

Meanwhile, God may simply be asking us to listen.

What makes Psalm 46:10 so powerful is that God doesn’t say, “Be still” when everything is peaceful. The chapter describes mountains shaking, waters roaring, and nations raging.

Right in the middle of all that chaos, God says:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Stillness isn’t always inactivity.

Sometimes stillness is trust.

There are certainly times when God calls us to move, change, work, speak, or make a decision. But there are also times when our constant adjusting becomes another way of trying to control something that only God can control.

Proverbs 3:5–6 tells us to trust in the Lord rather than leaning entirely on our own understanding. And in 1 Kings 19:11–12, Elijah discovered that God wasn’t in the wind, earthquake, or fire. Then came “a still small voice.”

Sometimes we need to take our hands off the sliders.

You don’t have to understand every note to trust the Composer.

You don’t have to make every season sound like the previous one.

You don’t have to fix everything before you can experience God’s presence.

And just because this season sounds different doesn’t mean God has stopped writing the song.

Sometimes faith means leaving the equalizer alone long enough to actually hear what God is doing.

Encouragement:

Before you adjust something today, ask yourself:

“Has God told me to change this—or have I simply become uncomfortable with the way this part of the song sounds?”

That’s an important difference.

Not every uncomfortable season needs to be escaped.
Not every silence needs to be filled.
Not every problem needs your immediate solution.
Not every unexpected note means something has gone wrong.

Maybe today isn’t about fixing.

Maybe today isn’t about adjusting.

Maybe today is about listening.

Take your hands off the controls for a moment and trust the One who can hear the entire song while you can only hear the note you’re living in right now.

Prayer:

Father, quiet my desire to constantly adjust everything around me. Give me wisdom to recognize when You are calling me to act and when You are asking me to be still.

When circumstances don’t sound the way I expected, keep me from assuming something must be wrong. Help me remember that You hear the entire song while I only hear the note I’m living in right now.

Teach me to listen before I adjust, trust before I worry, and recognize Your presence in every season.

Today, I take my hands off the controls and place my life back into Yours.
