Surrounded by Fire, but Not Forsaken

“Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”
—Daniel 3:25 NKJV

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego were thrown into a blazing furnace because they refused to bow down and worship another god. They entered the fire bound, but when the king looked inside, he saw four men walking freely—and the fourth appeared like the Son of God.

They were surrounded by fire, but they were not alone. God was with them in the middle of it.

They went into the fire bound, but they came out free.

This photograph of a church in Ferris, Texas, is a powerful representation of that truth. The church leaders prayed. The congregation prayed. The people prayed because they understood that the Church is not the building—the people are the Church. The fire consumed the land all around the building, yet the church remained standing.

Are you surrounded by fire today?

Maybe it is the fire of financial struggles, problems at work, a broken relationship, sickness, grief, or uncertainty. Perhaps everything around you seems to be burning, and you feel the heat getting closer.

Where does your faith lie?

God does not always keep us from entering the fire, but He promises to be with us in it. You may feel the heat. You may feel as though you are being consumed. But if you continue trusting Him, you can come through the other side stronger, freer, and with a faith that has been purified.

Fire may burn away what was holding you captive, but it cannot destroy what God has protected.

The grass around you may look scorched today, but it will grow green again. Fire purifies, clears away the dead things, and prepares the ground for new growth.

Another trial will eventually come. When it does, remember what God brought you through before. Remember that you were never alone. The same God who stood with you in the last fire will meet you in the next one.

You may be surrounded by fire, but you are not forsaken.
