The Cost of Carrying Too Much
Scripture:
“Come to me, all of you who are struggling and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
— Mattityahu (Matthew) 11:28–30, CJB
Reflection:
This week I’m seeing a neurologist and neurosurgeon because my spine—from C3 to C7—has lost its natural curve and collapsed under years of carrying heavy weight. My body was designed to carry weight properly, but not endlessly, and not without limits. Over time, the cost showed up physically.
And God pressed something deeper on my heart.
If carrying physical weight we weren’t meant to carry can damage the body, imagine what carrying spiritual and emotional weight we were never meant to carry does to the soul. Guilt that isn’t ours. Shame we were never assigned. Fear, bitterness, control, past wounds, expectations, and baggage we keep picking back up.
We tell ourselves we’re being strong. Responsible. Faithful.
But strength doesn’t mean carrying what God never asked us to hold.
Encouragement:
Some of the pain we live with isn’t punishment—it’s a warning. A signal that the load is too heavy and it’s time to lay it down. Jesus never invited us to be crushed by life; He invited us to come to Him.
Ask yourself today: What am I carrying that God never told me to carry?
Then, in faith, set it down.
The cost of carrying too much is real—but so is the healing that comes when we finally trust Him enough to release it.
