Water to a Stranger

Water to a Stranger

Scripture:
“And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’”
—Matthew 25:40 NKJV

Reflection:
As we were traveling home from Missouri, we began looking for a rest stop. As we approached one, I noticed a man walking along the highway in the intense heat. At first, I did not give it much thought.

After using the restroom and buying some water, I saw the same man approaching the rest stop with an empty bottle. He looked exhausted, dirty, and worn down by the road. Many people might have avoided him, but an unexpected calm came over me. I went back inside, bought two more bottles of water, and walked toward him.

He seemed unsure as I approached, but when I handed him the water, something changed. Although no words were spoken, I could see his gratitude.

I do not share this for recognition. In fact, lately I have passed stranded people whom I probably should have stopped to help. This moment reminded me that when God places someone directly in our path, we should not ignore the opportunity to show His love.

Encouragement:
Serving Jesus does not always require a sermon, a platform, or a grand gesture. Sometimes it looks like two bottles of water offered to a stranger on a hot day.

Pay attention to the quiet prompting of the Holy Spirit. The person others overlook may be the very person God is asking you to see. When we serve the least, the forgotten, and the struggling, we are serving Christ Himself.

We can't see these opportunities when we're consumed with ourselves. Thanks for reminding me!
