What Language Are You Known For?
Scripture:
“So then, if anyone is united with the Messiah, he is a new creation—the old has passed; look, what has come is fresh and new!”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17 (CJB)
Reflection:
As I prepare for a mission trip to Guatemala, some friends jokingly gave me a hard time about not speaking Spanish. They called me a “fake Mexican.” We laughed about it, but later God stirred something deeper in my heart.
The truth is, I don’t need to speak Spanish to prove my heritage. I was born in America. Hispanic is part of my family history, but it is not my identity.
Then this question came to mind:
Does it really matter if people remember me as a real Mexican who spoke Spanish, or would it be better to be remembered as a true child of Christ who spoke Jesus?
That hit me hard.
One day, nobody will care what language I spoke, what nationality I claimed, or what culture I came from. What will matter is whether people saw Christ in me. Did I love like Jesus? Did I serve like Jesus? Did I forgive like Jesus? Did I point others to Him?
My greatest heritage is not found in my last name, my ancestry, or the language I speak. My true lineage is found at the foot of the cross. Through Christ, I have been adopted into the family of God.
I don’t want to be remembered for speaking Spanish, English, or any other language.
I want to be remembered for speaking Jesus.
Encouragement:
Your nationality, culture, and family heritage are gifts from God, but they are not your ultimate identity. As believers, our citizenship is in heaven, and our identity is found in Christ alone.
Today, ask yourself: When people leave a conversation with me, do they remember my culture more than my Savior?
May we live in such a way that people see Jesus long before they see anything else about us.
