Who’s Holding the Rudder?
Scripture:
“If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Or consider ships: though they are so large and driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.” — James 3:3-4 (CJB)
Reflection:
James paints a powerful picture. A horse can weigh over a thousand pounds, yet a small bit controls its direction. A massive ship can be pushed by powerful winds and towering waves, yet a tiny rudder determines where it goes.
The same principle applies to our words.
How many times have we heard someone say, “If you had just said that differently, we wouldn’t be arguing right now”? A single sentence can build up or tear down. A few careless words can damage a relationship, while a few thoughtful words can bring healing and peace.
The tongue may be small, but it directs the course of our lives much like a rudder directs a ship. When we lose control of our words, we often find ourselves headed toward conflict, regret, and wreckage. But when we surrender our speech to God and carefully consider our words, we can avoid many storms before they ever begin.
A captain who abandons the rudder risks shipwreck. Likewise, when we fail to guard our tongues, we risk steering our lives into unnecessary trouble. While James reminds us that no man can fully tame the tongue on his own, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit we can learn to pause, seek wisdom, and speak with grace.
The question today is simple: Who’s holding the rudder?
Encouragement:
Before you speak today, pause and ask the Lord to guide your words. Let your speech be seasoned with grace, filled with truth, and directed by the One who knows the destination. A small adjustment of the rudder today may keep you from a shipwreck tomorrow.
